The Ohio State University, also known as Ohio State or OSU, is a public research university located in Columbus, which is the capital, the county seat of Franklin County, and largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio, as well as the 4th American Midwest city and the state’s 3rd largest metropolitan area, behind Cincinnati and Cleveland, having a population estimated at a number of more than 750 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which also makes it the 16th largest city in USA.
OSU was founded in 1870, as a land-grant university in accordance with the Morrill Act of 1862, first starting under the name of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, adopting its current name in 1878, decision which was made in order to better highlight its expanded focus. It is currently the second largest university campus in USA, and it has been highly ranked by numerous significant publications such as the U.S. News & World Report, which placed it among the top 150 universities in the world and named it the best public university in the state.
The university offers its students numerous educational programs in various fields of study, through dozens of colleges and schools, which include: the College of Dentistry, College of Education and Human Ecology, Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture, Division of Arts and Humanities, Graduate School, John Glenn School of Public Affairs, Max M. Fisher College of Business and Michael E. Moritz College of Law, among others.
OSU’s athletic teams are known as the Ohio State Buckeyes, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I in all sports (Division I FBS in football), including in the Big Ten Conference, as well as in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, for men’s hockey and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, for women’s hockey. The university has produced several outstanding sports figures, over the years, such as 1936 Olympics gold medalist Jesse Owens "the Buckeye Bullet" (track and field), Chic Harley (three-time All-American football running back) or the first 3-time player of the year in Big Ten Basketball history Jessica Davenport (women’s basketball).
